Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

The Artist is a 2011 French romantic comedy drama in the style of a black-and-white silent film. The film was written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius and stars Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo. The story takes place in Hollywood, between 1927 and 1932, and focuses on the relationship of an older silent film star and a rising young actress, as silent cinema falls out of fashion and is replaced by the “talkies”.

The Artist received near-universal acclaim from critics and won many accolades. Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered. The film was nominated for six Golden Globes, the most of any 2011 film, and won three; Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Original Score, and Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Dujardin. In January 2012 the film was nominated for twelve BAFTAs, also the most of any film from 2011, and won seven, the most wins of the night, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Hazanavicius, and Best Actor for Dujardin.

It was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director for Hazanavicius, and Best Actor for Dujardin, who was the first French actor ever to win. It was the first French film to ever win Best Picture, the first mainly silent film to win since 1927′s Wings (the first recipient of the Best Picture Award, in 1929), the first film presented in the 4:3 aspect ratio to win since 1955′s Marty, the first black-and-white film to win since 1960′s The Apartment, and the first non-R-rated film to win since 2004′s Million Dollar Baby.

In France, it was nominated for ten César Awards, winning six, including Best Film, Best Director for Hazanavicius and Best Actress for Bejo. The Artist became the most awarded French film in history.

Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

They produced the artwork for the iconic Star Wars poster, what you probably didn’t know was that it wouldn’t be used as a US theatrically released one-sheet movie poster for another 15 years!

Now before you go writing in…

The original poster was done by Tom Jung but it seems when they first saw it Lucasfilms felt it was too ‘dark’ and commissioned the brothers to produce another based on Jung’s work. But with the deadline to produce the required newspaper ads just nine days away, the artwork needed to be done in two!

With some movie stills and a photo of Tom Jung’s concept the brothers raced back to their studio and started painting. The only direction they were given was to make the image look “comic bookish.” In their book The Star Wars Poster Book by Steve Sansweet and Pete Vilmur, Greg Hildebrandt remembers the tag-team approach they used to complete the piece. “I posed my then-wife in a nightgown and tore it in a few places to get that ‘Frazetta’ look,” he added, “I had a friend throw on a bathrobe for Luke, then I took Polaroid photos, and Tim and I started to draw. By then it was around 8 p.m. We drew together until about midnight, then I went to sleep and Tim transferred what we had drawn to art board, painted for three or four hours, woke me up, and then I painted for a while. We worked like that for thirty-six hours before we finished.”

When it was completed the Hildebrandts were called in to do some touch up. Then the stroke genius, the brothers had a suggestion. “We thought there should be more characters, especially in the space to the right of Luke,” Greg Hildebrandt says. They asked if they could paint in C-3PO and R2-D2, and the studio approved. With a handful of acrylics, the brothers added the droids to the painting right there and then!

Back then Lucasfilms didn’t weld the big stick that they do today so it was 20th Century Fox who had the last word and they decided to go with the original Jung design. However all was not lost, the Hildebrandt design was in fact used on the first bi-lingual produced posterand also on promotional material produced at the time and 15 years later it would feature as the re-release poster.

Their poster design is now considered to be highly prized and very collectible (particularly the bi-lingual one), as valuable as the original Jung design. The original British quad release of their design is quite rare and well worth having in your collection…if you can afford it!

Who are the Brother Hildebrandt?

In 1939 Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in the White House. Hitler had begun to wage war in Europe, The Wizard of OZ would soon charm 131 million people and the Brothers Hildebrandt were born. Timothy Allen Mark Hildebrandt was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 23, 1939 to George and Germaine Hildebrandt, five minutes after the birth of his identical twin brother Greg. The parents fostered a world of fantasy for their sons as works by Jules Verne, H. G Wells. Frank L. Baum and Edgar Rice Burroughs could be found throughout the household, as well as books illustrated by N.C. Wyeth and Howard Pyle.

They were strongly influenced by many great comic books and strips, like Terry & the Pirates, Steve Canyon, Prince Valiant, Tarzan, Flash Gordon, Wonder Woman, Bat-Man, and Superman. They were captivated by other forms of fantasy: puppets, especially Charlie McCarthy, Howdy Doody and the Kuklapolitans; science fiction novels/films, including Frankenstein, When Worlds Collide and War of the Worlds; and illustrators, N.C. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish.

Over the years Greg and Tim would work together and separately, winning awards and fame. Together they won the coveted Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. They created everything from their fantasy novel, Urshurak, to that now famous poster for Star Wars, to the best-selling calendars illustrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.

Perhaps their biggest influence was Walt Disney, especially his Snow White, Pinocchio and Fantasia. They dreamed of becoming Disney animators. While they did not work for Disney, they became animators and documentary film-makers, working on a film about Project Hope for the Jam Handy Co., industrial film producers. Jam Handy won the Golden Eagle award for this film.

Shortly after leaving Detroit for New York they worked for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen making documentary films on world hunger.

Then they went on to write and illustrate their own epic fantasy novel Urshurak, published in 1979, which was on the New York Times Bestsellers List for six weeks (they unsuccessfully attempted to turn Urshurak into a feature film).

The brothers went their separate ways in 1981 and didn’t speak for several years, Greg Hildebrandt remembers. But after 12 years the brothers reunited in 1993. They worked on Marvel posters, pre-production art for Stan Lee & Michael Uslan, producer of the Batman Films, a King Tut book, the 1994 Marvel Masterpieces card set, X-Men & Spiderman card sets, Terry & The Pirates comic strip and an X-Men 2099 painted Bookshelf edition released in January 1996.

In 1999 Greg began to paint a life-long dream. He created his American Beauties series of Retro Pinup art. There are presently 65 amazing paintings in this series and Greg says the possibilities are endless.

In 2003 he began creating art for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Since Greg loves Rock Opera there could not be a better match than his art and TSO’S music. 2011 marks Greg’s ninth year creating all of the art for Paul O’Neill and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

With his American Beauties Pinup Series Greg has touched on many individual areas. He has painted Noir Pinups, good Girls, bad girls, show girls, tough girls and cute girls. Recently he has focused on girls and cars, mostly antique, the cars not the girls. Greg has appeared at the Barrett-Jackson automobile auctions in Palm Beach Florida, Las Vegas, Orange County, CA and Scottsdale where he just painted a 1959 Chevy Impala rear-end, live.

Automobile Quarterly Magazine did a feature article on Greg in the 4th Quarter of 2008 and used one of his favorite pinups on their cover. This was a real honor for him.

In 2009 Greg painted an amazing pinup on the nose cone of a completely refurbished WWII P-38 Lightning. This was a dream come true for him. Since then he has painted a pinup on a 1944 Bearcat and a 1944 B-25 bomber. And just recently he finished a 1949 tiger Cat WWII plane. At 72 Greg still paints almost every day and stills loves what he does.

The art of Greg Hildebrandt allows the fantasies and dreams of children of all ages to come true.

Tim Hildebrandt passed away in June of 2006.

The Secret of Nimh (1981)
Star Wars (1977) (original artwork used on the first bi-lingual poster (la guerra de las galaxia) and then used for the re-release in 1992.)

Also painted but never used:

Young Frankentein (1974) (another urgent studio request, painted in 24 hours!)
Barbarella (1968)

Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

Alvan “Hap” Hadley (1985-1976): Hap created movie posters for some of the best-loved silent movies. Some of his most well known works are the posters he produced for Buster Keaton’s 1927 movies “The General” and “College,” and for Charlie Chaplin’s 1928 Oscar-winning film, “The Circus.”

Only one original “The General” is known to have survived and fetched $46,000 at a Christie’s auction in 1994 whilst a restored, on linen poster of “The Circus” sold for just over $13,000 in 2007.

His career spanned some 30 years, and although he mainly produced for MGM he also supplied movie posters for many of the other major Hollywood studios he also produced some of the promotional posters for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Howard Hughes’ famous 1930 WWI aerial combat movie (Hell’s Angels) was represented on a movie poster drawn by Hap – very few of his art appears at auctions today but from time to time a bargain is still to be should they ever come available.

Hap’s style was very much characterisation, a style that he developed an official artist for the Marine Corps, producing propaganda-laden cartoon strips. As a result of this background his drawing style is almost instantly recognisable in many of his movie posters when his art comes up for sale.

You can find his vintage movie posters in such film titles as:

Rough House Rosie (1927)
The Jazz Singer (1927)
The General (1927)
College (1927)
The Circus (1928)
Hell’s Angels (1930)
Cock of the Air (1932)
Laff It Off (1928 – Broadways stage show)
Reform Girl (1933)
Cheating Blondes (1933)

Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

John Held Jr. (1899-1958): Certainly not as well known in the movie poster field as he was in magazine and periodicals media but John Held Jr was one of the most famous and successful magazine illustrators of the 1920s.

It was his images of bob-cut flappers and racoon-coated frat boys that defined the look of that decade. His move to New York in 1910 proved a good career move and his art was soon appearing in major magazines such as Life, Liberty, Judge, Cosmopolitan and The New Yorker. Held lost his fortune with the arrival of The Depression, and his work also fell out of favour, in his later years he taught at both Harvard and the University of Georgia.

However, when it came to movie posters John Held Jr was (and still is) less well known probably due as much to the amount of titles he produced as to the small success of the movies he was hired to produced them for. But during the 1920s he was very much a favourite of art director Hal Burrows, who hired to illustrate many of MGM’s comedy posters. John Held Jr Signature

Held also signed his movie posters and most of them were produced with his telltale signature on them.

Today, his posters, due to their rarity and their now popular styling generally command a good premium at auction (around $2,000-$3,000), look for such titles as:

Battling Butler (1926)
The Boy Friend (1926)
Money Talks (1926)
Tin Hats (1926)
So This Is College (1929)
The Girl Said No (1930)

Throughout his life he produced memorable drawings of some very famous people, his simple line drawings are still in such demand even now nearly 10 years after his death.

As to movie posters, Hirschfeld worked in the art departments of MGM as well as Warner Brothers, and in fact was art director for David O. Selznick for some time.

Some of his most memorable posters were produced over a 20 year period from 1929 and although he returned to his preferred art form of caricaturisation he did briefly produce movie posters once again in the 70s.

Just like his art some of his movie posters are well regarded and very much in demand by collectors, movie posters for such films as:

Bringing Up Father (1928)
The Broadway Melody (1929)
The Bacon Grabbers (1929)

Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

Drew Struzan is still one of the film industry’s most recognised and celebrated movie poster artists. Born in 1947 he began producing movie posters while still in his teens and fondly remembers his first ever printed one being for the 1975 movie Black Bird.

His career like many was not such an illustrious beginning (more an illustrated one!) and he mainly started by producing posters for B Grade movies (B Grade science fiction movie poster collectors should probably keep an eye out for his 1976 poster for the movie ‘Food of the Gods or the following year his production for the movie ‘Empire of the Ants’).

One could say his big ‘break’ came in 1977 when he was asked to collaborate with fellow artist Charles White III who had been hired by Lucas to create a poster design for the 1978 re-release of Star Wars. White, well-known for his own airbrush prowess, was apparently uncomfortable with portraiture so asked Struzan for his help on the project. Struzan agreed and painted the human characters in oil paints and White focused on the ships, Darth Vader, C-3PO and all the mechanical details of the poster art.

The poster they produced is said to be one of George Lucas’ favourites, the rest as they say, is history…

Throughout the late ’70s and ’80s Struzan produced poster work for such films as Blade Runner, The Cannonball Run, the Police Academy series, Back to the Future, Coming To America, First Blood, Risky Business, D.C. Cab, Stroker Ace, An American Tail and many more. During this period, Struzan continued his association with Lucas by designing the original Industrial Light & Magic logo, and creating the associated one-sheet artwork for both the continuing Star Wars saga and the Indiana Jones series of films.

On announcing his retirement in 2008 (!) he said “Having been working at not working has produced a guy who could never return to illustration again. It took a lot to attempt the idea of retiring from my 40 years of effort and sacrifice but now that I have, I am delighting in life as never before. I had forgotten how to rest, to smell the proverbial roses and to see the future as opportunity. I am grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to do all the work I did. I am well pleased to have been able to give a gift of beauty and peace through my artwork to so many throughout the world. Now I have laid down the burden and have peace and happiness as the reward for my day’s labor.”

His movie poster art still remains some some of the most sort after of the modern era.
Trivia: In the opening shot of the 2007 movie The Mist it features film posters of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series and The Thing (1982). All posters in the room at the beginning of the film were painted by Drew Struzan.

Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

Reynold Brown (1917-1991): If you loved the old classic movie monster posters of the 50s and 60s then you will know who Reynold Brown is, and if not then you will instantly recognise much of his work.

In 1951, while presenting at an art exhibition for Art Center, Brown met Misha Kallis, an Art Director for Universal Pictures, she was so impressed with his work she asked him to design the poster for the Gregory Peck (B-Grade) movie A World in His Arms. That began a series of over 250 campaigns for Universal, MGM, Disney, and American International Pictures (AIP).

Brown’s work appeared in such work as epics as Ben Hur and Spartacus, in westerns like The Alamo and Taza, Son of Cochise and in dramas, science fiction, horror and monster movies.

But it was his science fiction and monster work that really has developed a huge international fan base, works such as The Time Machine and This Island Earth, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Attack of The 50ft Woman are always in demand by vintage movie poster collectors.

In 1994 he featured in the TV doco “The Man Who Drew Bug-Eyed Monsters” (we would love a copy!).

As we know, it is not unusual for movie to have more than one artist (ergo more than one poster version), for instance a Dr. Zhivago posters by Reynold Brown and was also produced in another design by the great Howard Terpning. The following is a list of most of the productions he worked on, if you are aware of any we have missed please let us know.

Vintage Movie Posters of Sydney

During his 60+ year career he produced an astonishing volume of movie posters, his movie posters head the list for the most movie posters by an artist where the movie has won Best Picture: Casablanca (1942), My Fair Lady (1964),The Sting (1973),Ordinary People (1980),Platoon (1986), and Unforgiven (1992).

Born in 1921 Bill’s career spanned some 60 years beginning in 1940, when he got a job with Warner Bros. working in their poster department – his first two assignments were Yankee Doodle Dandy and Casablanca!

In 1947 Gold became head of the Warner’s poster department a position he would remain in until 1959 when he left to to form BG Charles with his brother, Charlie, where Bill would concentrate on poster design, and Charlie on movie trailers.

In 1962 Bill formed Bill Gold Advertising.

Bill has produced every movie poster for his close friend Clint Eastwood from 1971 to 2003. “He’s a perfect gentleman. We’re a great match cause he knows what he likes, he has fantastic creative instincts,” said Gold of the relationship. “I know what he likes.”

When Clint Eastwood presented Bill with a Lifetime Key Art Award from the Hollywood Reporter in 1994, he simply referred to Bill as “the greatest.” And in Eastwood’s speech about the posters produced for his movies “…The ones that didn’t feature a Bill Gold poster,” he said, “I regret.”

Some of his posters were for controversial movies such as A Clockwork Orange but interesting was the controversy caused by the poster he produced for the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only.

The image used for the poster was first shot on film and to achieve the ‘revealing’ nature of the bikini bottom they told the model to put them on backwards.

When the advert was published in the NY Times it was ‘censored’, the paper placing a pair of black shorts over the model. Of course that was in 1981, such modesty does not exist to the same degree today!

Perhaps one of the most ‘missed’ items on one of his most famous movie posters is for the movie Casablanca. The idea was to give it an ‘action’ movie ‘feel’ and so in the poster a gun is shown in Humphrey Bogart’s hand – in the movie he never had one!

He once said about how to create a good movie poster. “I think, simplicity…about creating an image that a movie goes will identify with that film…”

His list of movie poster credits perhaps a testament to that…
